Races5K Run

Kick off a weekend of races with the UPMC Health Plan/UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K Run. Enjoy 3.1 miles of city streets, cross over one of the many beautiful bridges in Pittsburgh and reach your goal at the official DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon finish line in the heart of downtown. 

Course Description

The UPMC Health Plan/UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K Run begins on the North Shore and runs through the North Side before crossing the Roberto Clemente bridge and finishing at the official finish line downtown.

  • USA Track and Field certified course
  • There is one fluid station positioned along the course 
  • Water and Nuun Hydration carbohydrate + electrolyte drink mix will be offered at the fluid station

Are you planning on a warm-up run Saturday, May 2?  Then join us for the annual STEEL CHALLENGE. Run the 5K on Saturday and the marathon, half marathon or marathon relay on Sunday to earn a special bonus medal!

UPMC Health Plan/UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K Run booth at the Pittsburgh Health and Fitness Expo at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center

Participants may authorize another individual to retrieve the race packet on their behalf. The individual picking up the packet is required to show (their own) photo ID along with providing the following items. 

  1. Packet pickup slip - Slips will also be available onsite at the Expo to complete in person
  2. Participant race number - Available for lookup in the mobile app, on the website or at the Expo
Saturday, May 2 from 6:30 AM – 7:45 AM

5K/Kids Marathon Packet Pickup tent in Gold Lot 4 at the corner of West General Robinson Street and Mazeroski Way

Please arrive early to allow plenty of time to pick up race items.

5K numbers will be organized by race number instead of alphabetical by name. Please bring the email with your race number for faster service. Race numbers are also available for look-up via the P3R mobile app under the DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon race OR by visiting the Race Number Look-Up kiosks located within the Pittsburgh Health and Fitness Expo on race weekend. 

Registration Rules
  • No refunds or deferments of entry fees
  • Participants 14 years old or older may run on their own
  • Participants 5-13 years old must be accompanied by a parent/guardian (child and parent/guardian must both be registered)
  • Paper/mail-in registrations will not be accepted after January 1, 2020
Course Rules 
  • Bicycles, skateboards, scooters, baby joggers, strollers, roller skates and roller blades are not permitted on the course 
  • Animals are not permitted on the course
  • Headphones (iPods, mp3 players, CDs, tape walkmans, radios, etc.) are discouraged 
Course Time Limits

City streets, police offices and support are contracted for specific times and cannot be extended. Participants must meet at least a 14:00 min/mile pace.

If you are unable to adhere to the scheduled time/pace per mile listed on the schedule, you must move to the sidewalk so traffic can resume. If you choose to continue after the roads have reopened, there will be no medical support, fluid station or course marshals at intersections, and the course will no longer be marked. Participants after that time will not be guaranteed a time or medal. 


All participants who finish the race within the established time limites will receive a finisher medal.

Overall Awards 

Prizes will be awarded for the top three male and female finishers in the overall category.

Age Category Awards 

Prizes will be awarded for the top three finishers for the 5K in the following age categories for men and women: 9 & Under, 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79 and 80+

Award Rules
  • Age category awards are based on chip time, not gun time. 
  • Age category awards will be mailed once official race results have been submitted. Please allow three to four weeks post-race for awards to be distributed.
  • Overall category winners are not eligible for age group awards.
Race Numbers
  • Please fill out the emergency contact information on the back of the race number. Race numbers must be pinned to the front of your shirt for the timing chip to work.
  • No animals, bicycles, skateboards, scooters, baby joggers, strollers, roller skates or rollerblades are permitted. 
  • If you are running with a child 14 years of age or younger, keep an eye on your child at all times. There is no family reunion area at the end of the 5K course.  
  • If you run a slower pace, we recommend starting further back in the corral. 
Gear check
  • Drop off location: FedEx truck in Gold Lot 4 at the corner of West General Robinson Street and Mazeroski Way 
  • Pick up location: Boulevard of the Allies and Commonwealth Place outside the finish line chute
