5 Ways to Give Back to the Running Community on #GivingTuesday

After the Thanksgiving feasting and Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals have passed, there comes an opportunity to give back on #GivingTuesday. The annual event is a great way to cure your holiday hangover and refocus on what’s important in your life.

This year’s #GivingTuesday on Nov. 29 offers thousands of ways to make a difference. If running has changed your life or inspired you, consider giving back to the sport you love. Whether you donate time or money, there’s plenty of ways to support the running community:

Here are 5 ways to make a difference in the running community:

#1 Support Charity Runners or Become One

Donate $10 to any one of more than 40 official DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon charities or better yet, commit to run and raise money for a cause close your hear.  Each year charity runners not only conquer their distance but they also collectively raise more than $1.5 million for charities! If you choose to run for a charity, you'll get your registration for FREE.  Check out the many causes for you to support.

#2 Volunteer for a Race

One of the most rewarding ways to give back to the running community is to volunteer. An army of volunteers support the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events each year. Share a few hours on the weekend of May 5 - 7 and be part of the one largest events in Pittsburgh.

#3 Inspire the Next Generation to Run

P3R’s award-winning physical activity and nutrition program called Kids of STEEL reaches more than 6,500 kids each year. Your donation to the program will help pay for a new pair of shoes or race registration for an underprivileged youth who otherwise would not be able to participate in the program.

#4 Spread the Word

“Donate” a social media post to help spread the word about the 2017 charity program on Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram. Even if you can’t donate, you can still do your part! Don’t forget to tag the posts with #GivingTuesdayPGH

#5 Mentor a New Runner

Know a friend who's expressed an interest in running but doesn’t know where to start? Ask your friend to join you for a run and let them set the pace. You may be pleasantly surprised on how mentoring also improves your own motivation to run.
