Did you know that Pittsburgh has been dubbed the City of Champions when it comes to professional sports? The nickname came to life after the Pirates, Steelers and University of Pittsburgh Panthers won multiple titles in the 1970s, and it is still fitting today! Our teams have won their share of championships - five World Series, five Stanley Cup and six Super Bowl trophies - and our athletes have created some of sport’s enduring moments and memories.
When you consider that Pittsburgh has only had all three professional sports teams since the 1960s, no city of comparable size has matched our success in sports. Other towns may be able to claim more titles over the past 50 years, but when you crunch the numbers, it's easy to see why Pittsburgh truly is the City of Champions.
Since 1971, yinzers have witnessed 15 championship appearances by the Pirates, Penguins and Steelers. From these recent appearances, Pittsburgh's three professional sports teams have racked up an astounding 12 league titles between them. Additionally, Pittsburgh became the first city to ever hold the Lombardi and Stanley Cup trophies at the same time in 2009.
The Pirates, Penguins and Steelers give Pittsburgh many reasons to be proud, but the City of Champions nickname extends well beyond their respective sports. Recognizing that sports are central to Pittsburgh’s identity, the NCAA selected Pittsburgh to host 22 preliminary and championship events from 2018 to 2022. And for the first time, the UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon has been selected as the USATF Half Marathon Championships for men and women in 2018 and 2019.
