Kids of STEEL

Teaching children the positive relationship between exercise and nutrition.

Instilling lifelong, healthy habits in kids

Kids of STEEL is an exercise and nutrition program designed to motivate children to pursue quality nutrition and an active lifestyle by incorporating exercise and healthy eating habits into their daily routine. During the four-month training period children will:

  • Earn miles to run the equivalent of a marathon (26.2 miles)
  • Try new fruits, vegetables, beans and nuts each week
  • Learn the benefits of setting a goal, training and achieving that goal.
  • Track miles and food tastings on a training log and turn it in for a finisher prize to recognize their achievement

Kids of STEEL participants can complete the last mile of the program in one of two optional runs (both held the Saturday of marathon weekend):

  1. The Toyota of Pittsburgh Kids Marathon is a one mile fun run (not timed) for children to run with family and friends; or
  2. The UPMC Health Plan/UMPC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K Run, for more advanced runners.

Students completing the Kids of STEEL program receive a finisher prize, and students who complete both the program and participate in the kids run (or 5K) receive a finisher medal, shirt and goody bag.
