Neighborhood Festivals

NEIGHBORHOOD FESTIVALS 2011

Pittsburgh is an exciting place to be on Marathon weekend. Neighborhoods and communities along the course have made it a tradition to celebrate the Marathon by hosting neighborhood festivals and celebrations on race day; showcasing their communities and cheering on the many runners and walkers.

Racers have long commented that the enthusiastic crowd support throughout Pittsburgh’s many neighborhoods is one of the best features of the race!

STRIP DISTRICT
The Strip will be jumping on race morning as more than four different bands will rock runners along Penn Avenue. Arrive early to see runners at Mile 3 of their run, enjoy breakfast and cheer marathon runners as they return at Miles 23 and 24 of their runs.

NORTH SIDE
Cheer runners on through Mile 4 and 5. Stop by the Trib Total Media booth in West Park to make a sign to support your favorite runner. While there you can register to win great prizes!

WEST END
The West End Village is excited to be host to miles 6 and 7 of the Race Course this year, for the first time ever. They will be celebrating runners in several ways including:

  • unveiling a brand new "urban green space"
  • a "Breakfast in the Village" event featuring a feast of eye-opening foods
  • the cheers and well-wishes of the 12 surrounding communities, each with its own uniquely branded "street front" space
  • 4 hours of continuous entertainment provided by Pittsburgh Musical Theater, which is celebrating their 40th Anniversary
  • Festivities also will include a "warm up" event on Saturday evening before the race with live music
  • 12 communities of the West End will be involved: West End Village, Fairywood, Windgap, Chartiers City, Sheraden, Esplen, Crafton Heights, Oakwood, Westwood, Elliott and Ridgemont.

SOUTH SIDE
Rothman Gordon, Spirit Airlines, and Achieva will be partnering to cheer on runners along Mile 9 and Mile 10 of the Half.

OAKLAND
The Oakland Marathon Party will take place on Forbes Avenue during the marathon. This community party will include banana handouts to runners, free giveaways to party attendees and will showcase the fun, community spirit of Oakland.

SHADYSIDE
Runners through Shadyside will be met with a variety of activities including lululemon and X Shadyside as they cheer on passing runners!

HOMEWOOD
Homewood will be full of excitement as Operation Better Block hands out water to participants and the Pittsburgh Soul Steppers perform a dance marathon at the corner of Braddock and Frankstown to entertain the marathon runners.

EAST LIBERTY
Join the crowd on East Liberty Blvd to support runners and hear the music of a few of our bands. A fluid station will provide aid to participants

HIGHLAND PARK
Highland Park will have donuts and juice for spectators and Hill Jordan and his band will be playing on Bryant Street to inspire runners and crowds alike!

FRIENDSHIP
Join the Friendship community in welcoming runners along Baum Boulevard. The final Relay Exchange Zone highlights this area.

BLOOMFIELD
Bloomfield will be alive race weekend with an abundance of festivities. Activities begin on Thursday with a weekend long sidewalk sale. On Saturday at Groceria Italiana come to see who can make Bloomfield's Best Meatball. Later that day, a marathon pasta eating contest will be held at Del's Bar and Ristorante. The first contestant to finish 26.2 oz of spaghetti will be declared the winner! For more information on these contests, visit www.bloomfieldbusinessassociation.com

On Marathon Sunday enjoy the downhill run through Pittsburgh's Little Italy as the route will lined with spectators, bands, along with Italian and American flags.

DOWNTOWN
Nike will be doing “High Fives at 25”. Runners will be able to see themselves on a live, real-time video just before crossing the Roberto Clemente Bridge.
