Race and USATF Rules and Regs
All participants in the Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon and related events are asked to read and become familiar with the race rules and regulations.
- Entry fees are non-refundable.
- There is no race day registration.
- No-shows will not be mailed their race shirts or bags.
- Marathon runners must complete the course in six (6) hours.
- Half Marathon runners must complete the course in three and one half (3.5) hours. Due to the course restrictions, half marathon walkers who do not reach the final check point of the Half Marathon will be required to board the sweep.
- Headphones (ipods, mp3 players, CDs, tape walkmans, radios, etc.) are discouraged.
- Baby Joggers, strollers, roller/in-line skates, etc. are prohibited.
- The decisions of the race director are final in all matters.
- Marathon and Half Marathon walkers and ambulatory disabled start PROMPTLY at 7:30am.
- Marathoners or half marathoners who are running the first leg of the relay will wear two D-tags – one for the full/half marathon and one for the relay. The relay D-tag must be removed once they travel through the first relay exchange zone.
- All marathon relay participants must remove their D-Tag once they travel through their relay exchange zone to avoid their D-Tag being read near a timing mat or near the finish line.
- Cash awards are based on gun time not chip time. Chip time is recorded by an electronic chip that is attached to a runner’s shoe. Your chip records the time at which you cross the start line, the finish line and several split times in between. Chip time is often shorter than gun time because chip time begins when a runner crosses the start line while gun time starts when the gun is fired; many runners don’t cross the start line until several minutes after their official gun time has begun.
- Runners must be registered for the event that they win/place for cash. They can officially switch races but must be registered in the race in which they win or place.
- Walker etiquette: as a walker for the marathon or half marathon, you will begin the race at 7:30am - the same time as the runners.
- Age requirements for the Marathon - at least 18 years old; Half Marathon - at least 16 years old; and Marathon Relay - at least 14 years old. Age requirements are based on regulations by IMMDA. For further information and background, see: IMMDA Advisory Statement on Children and Marathoning.
