(James T. McCay) Water and fuel demands increase as your running distance increases. Have about one-half cup of fluids every twenty minutes and a snack of simple carbohydrates (such as sports gels, packets of honey, and energy drinks), every 45 minutes. Avoid fiber, protein and fat because these take longer to digest and can cause stomach cramps. For recovery nutrition, don't forget that real food can be just as good as, if not better than, sports bars and powders. |
HALF MARATHON COURSE DESCRIPTION
The UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon course offers runners an exciting course which crosses Pittsburgh's three rivers before finishing at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. This course is suprisingly flat and fast!

- USA Track and Field sanctioned course
- Bicycles, skateboards, scooters, baby joggers, strollers, roller skates and roller blades are not permitted on the course
- Headphones (ipods, mp3 players, CDs, tape walkmans, radios, etc.) are discouraged
- 2010 course is currently under review
- Fluid and medical aid stations are positioned along the course
- Water and Gatorade - lemon-lime - will be offered at every fluid station
COURSE HIGHLIGHTS
Runners will race on the North Shore of Pittsburgh past Heinz Field, PNC Park and the new Rivers Casino. The course crosses each of the three rivers in Pittsburgh and travels through the Southside before crossing the Smithfield Street Bridge and continues back through the streets of downtown Pittsburgh to the finish line near the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
Spectators are welcome to line the streets and cheer on the runners – and as years past have proven – Pittsburghers love to cheer on their champions.
